Prevention is the most important part of healthy skin. So, let’s talk about the things you should avoid, and the things you should immediately do to prevent signs of aging skin.

There are certain things you should avoid to prevent aging skin, such as:

Sugar and Alcohol

There is scientific evidence that eating sugar ages your skin. Advanced glycation end products are molecules that causes skin aging. AGE molecules are made from a series of chemical reactions from ingesting glucose or sugary rich foods or from smoking. Fried foods contain a higher amount of AGE molecules than sugary foods.

These AGE molecules are brutal on your skin. They trigger the production of inflammatory cytokines or peptides that damage your collagen.  Since collagen serves as the framework of the skin, with AGE molecules damaging the collagen, the skin ultimately appears aged with wrinkle lines.

Smoking

Smoking contributes to rough, aging skin, and specifically contributes to wrinkles and fine lines on the upper lip. People who smoke usually have pale, dull skin because smoking narrows blood vessels, causing a decrease in blood flow. It also depletes your skin’s oxygen supply and damages collagen and elastin—the fibers that give your skin strength and elasticity. Worst of all, smoking increases your risk of squamous cell skin cancer.1 Dr. Dy’s best advice is to completely stay away from smoking, or quit immediately if you are a smoker.

Chewing gum

Chewing gum is bad for your jaw muscles and can contribute to wrinkles. Sometimes Dr. Dy has to perform Botox to the jaw muscles to patients who are long-term gum chewers. Chronic gum chewing can eventually strengthen and enlarge the jaw muscles giving someone a square shaped face. Blowing your chewing gum contributes to fine lines especially around the mouth area. Gum chewers are more likely to develop wrinkles early in life because of the overuse of the facial muscles, causing skin to sag and lose its elasticity.

Drinking out of straws, cans or bottles

Much like chewing gum, drinking out of straws, cans or bottles can cause wrinkles and fine lines around your lips. The repetitive tightening purse of your lips ages them by loosening the delicate skin around your mouth.

Do the following to achieve your healthiest skin and prevent aging:

Follow a good skincare regimen

A good daily skincare regimen is the very basic beginning of fighting the signs of aging. Don’t waste time –– the earlier you start implementing a good routine, the earlier you are fighting aging, damaged and sagging skin.  Dr. Dy suggests that your daily regimen include:

  • A good cleanser
  • Gentle exfoliation
  • Serums and/or creams with antioxidants, peptides and retinol
  • A good sunscreen with at least SPF 30
Apply sunscreen daily

People who diligently wear sunscreen every day dramatically slow down the development of sun damage, wrinkles, premature aging and sagging skin. If you don’t wear it on a daily basis, your skin is exposed to harsh and harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. When your skin is exposed to the sun often, you will start developing fine lines and dull skin. Over time, these fine lines become coarser, and eventually your skin will appear to look thirsty and leathery.

Get early Botox treatments

Botox is a great way to combat aging because it prevents lines from forming and starts treating the ones that already have formed. It’s the easiest way to get young and tight skin without a full face lift. For example, injecting Botox around the eyebrow can actually lift the brow, making your face look less tired and giving you a more youthful appearance.

Getting older doesn’t mean your skin has to look older.

Beautiful skin can be achieved at an age, as long as you are vigilant about your skin care. So, before you start looking into full face lifts, talk with Dr. Dy about other ways to keep your skin looking young and healthy.
