“The best thing you can do to save your hair is to get diagnosed early,” says Dr. Lady Dy of Dy Dermatology Center. “The chances of regrowing hair are much greater the earlier and younger you get diagnosed and start working on it.”

There is a difference between excessive hair shedding and actual hair loss.

People typically lose about70 to 100 hairs per day.

People who experience hair loss through excessive shedding typically loose hundreds of hair a day, sometimes reaching a thousand. They will notice their hair is becoming thinner and sparser and there are no visible signs of localized hair loss. This kind of hair loss is usually temporary.

What causes excessive hair shedding?

  • Excessive weight loss
  • Childbirth
  • Period of high stress
  • Recovering from an operation or illness
  • Poor diet and nutrition
  • Overusing hot tools and harsh hair care products
  • Hormonal changes
  • Actual hair loss (anagen effluvium) occurs when something stops the hair from growing, and it will not grow until the cause is stopped.

What causes actual hair loss?

  • Hereditary hair loss (male-pattern baldness and female-pattern baldness)
  • Illness and medical conditions
  • Medications
  • Cancer treatments
  • Ringworm of the scalp
  • Extreme stress

The most common form of hair loss is hereditary pattern-baldness.

If a person’s hair loss is gradual and becomes more noticeable with each passing year, he or she may have hereditary-pattern baldness––a natural condition caused by some combination of genetics, hormone levels and the aging process. The condition is also called androgenetic alopecia, and/or male-pattern and female-pattern baldness.

With hereditary hair loss, the normal cycle of hair growth changes, resulting in shorter, thinner hair. Eventually, hair growth in certain parts of the scalp stops entirely, which causes the typical pattern of hair loss.

There are many different signs and symptoms of hair loss.

Here are a few things to know about signs and symptoms of hair loss.

  • Gradual thinning on top of head is the most common type and sign of hair loss. This is the usual pattern of hair loss for those with male- and female-pattern baldness. In men, hair often begins to recede from the forehead in a line that resembles the letter “M,” whereas women will usually show the hair loss with a broadening part while maintaining their hair along their forehead.
  • Some people experience hair loss that leaves circular or patchy bald spots. This type of hair loss usually affects just the scalp, but can also occur in beards or eyebrows.
  • A big physical or emotional shock to the body can cause hair to loosen and shed. Noticeable handfuls of hair may come out while being washed, brushed, or even gently tugged. This is from shedding and won’t cause bald spots or patches—just thinning hair.
  • Hair loss doesn’t just happen on the scalp. Some conditions and medical treatments, such as chemotherapy for cancer, can result in the loss of hair all over your body. The hair usually grows back.

There are treatment options for hair loss.

Just as there are many causes, there are many treatments for hair loss. Dr. Dy encourages her patients to reach out to her as soon as they notice signs of hair loss.

The earlier hair loss is detected, the easier it is to treat. Luckily, Dr. Dy specializes in hair loss treatments and works with her patients to develop a treatment plan specific to their condition and needs.

Dr. Dy uses many methods to treat hair loss in her patients, including:

  • Combination Therapy (Drug and Vitamin Supplementation)

Dr. Dy encourages her patients who struggle with hair loss to incorporate supplements into their daily routine to help stimulate hair growth.
