Kybella TreatmentsKYBELLA® is an injectable, prescription medicine used to reduce the appearance of submental fat (double chin) in adults. This non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment is the only FDA-approved treatment of its kind.  Kybella is a safe, effective solution to eliminate a double chin.

Kybella is a great option if you are bothered by the appearance of a double chin, but don’t want surgery, or if diet, exercise, and weight loss have not helped. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery found that 67 percent of survey respondents said they were bothered by a double chin.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella works because it contains deoxycholic acid, which already occurs naturally in the body. Deoxycholic acid helps to break down and absorb dietary fats by destroying the membrane surrounding the fat cells.

When Kybella is injected beneath the chin, it helps destroy the fat cells there. These cells are removed naturally by the body’s own lymphatic and circulatory systems over the following weeks. The deoxycholic acid itself is metabolized and excreted, just as if your body had produced it.  Because the fat cells are destroyed and can no longer store fat, you should not need additional treatments once you have achieved your desired appearance.

Treating double chin with Kybella injections

Photos depict an actual patient and have not been retouched in any way.

Two treatment sessions are normally needed and are spaced four to six weeks apart. During the actual treatment, you will receive multiple small injections of Kybella under your chin, which should take about 15-20 minutes. The number of injections will depend on your desired results and the amount of submental fat.

The most common side effects from Kybella include:

  • Swelling at the injection site
  • Soreness in the treatment area
  • Redness or bruising

These are the same side effects associated with any other injection, including a flu vaccine or allergy shot. If you experience these symptoms, it often helps to hold an ice pack against the treatment area, or try over-the-counter pain relievers for any soreness.

There is no downtime associated with Kybella. You can resume all your usual activities right away, based on your own comfort level.
