Early recognition and intervention is the key to stopping or slowing hair loss. There are many different types of hair loss, some of which are not reversible and need swift action. Scalp inflammation, which has a shiny appearance, will result in a permanent hair follicle loss.
The most common form of hair loss is genetically inherited, known as pattern baldness in both men and women. Although most recognized in men, about 40% of women have pattern hair loss.
There are many hair growth treatments including oral prescription medications, appropriate supplements/vitamins, topical medicines, laser light therapy, platelet rich plasma treatment (PRP) along with scalp microneedling. Hair transplantation is also a viable option when appropriate.
Laser light therapy utilizes visible red light generated in a laser diode. It promotes hair growth by increasing blood and circulation and stimulating hair follicle growth.
Platelet rich plasma treatment (PRP) is the latest treatment for hair loss. Dr. Dy uses some of the patient’s blood to harvest the growth factors found in plasma. The growth factors are then delivered into the patient’s scalp to stimulate hair follicle growth. This procedure has been widely used in wound healing and in the treatment of tendon injuries and osteoarthritis.
Medication options include oral prescription drugs and topical prescriptions and growth factors.
